【Macroscopic Features】 The medicinal material appears as a long cylindrical root with multiple branches, measuring 30–75 cm in length and 0.3–1 cm in diameter at the thicker end. The surface is reddish-brown to brown, marked with longitudinal ridges, fine wrinkles, and small tubercular scars from leaves, branches, and buds, along with scattered punctate lenticels. The texture is hard and brittle, easily fractured. Transverse slices are 2–4 mm thick, revealing a reddish-brown cortex, yellowish-white to pale yellowish-brown wood, and a pith that is somewhat square in cross-section. It has a distinct aromatic odor and a sweet, slightly pungent taste, with a more intense flavor in the cortex.
