【Macroscopic Features】 The medicinal substance is elongated-conical, 10–25 cm in length and 1.5–2.5 cm in diameter. The surface is grayish-brown or yellowish-brown. The root head is bluntly quadrangular or nearly rounded, with longitudinal wrinkles, branch root scars, and transverse lenticel-like protrusions, some arranged in four vertical rows. The apex bears a depressed stem scar. The texture is firm, and the fracture surface is whitish or grayish-white, starchy in texture. The cambium ring is brownish, nearly square or circular. The cortex is scattered with numerous brown oil glands. It emits an aromatic odor and has a pungent, slightly bitter taste.
